Reddit - The company with one of the cutest icons
July 21st, 2008, Posted in Organizational Writeups, Reddit by julianReddit is a social news website whereby users can post links to content that is located on the web. Other users may then vote the posted links up or down, causing them to appear more or less prominently on the Reddit home page.
Reddit was founded by Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman, graduates from the University of Virginia, and received it’s initial funding from Y Combinator.
The Reddit logo changes for various holidays and often for no reason, paying homage to Star Wars classic video games, and geek culture in general. The logo generally changes daily, picking up on big dicussion subjects within the site or major news stories.
To me, Reddit is a cool site to obtain the latest news items from all over the globe. My personal favourite? The ‘controversial’ tab that provides links to the most controversial news items. However, it doesn’t seem to have a lot of news items from Malaysia which has a lot of controversial news items popping up lately, which I feel cannot be mentioned publicly on this blog (since we want to be politically neutral). Seems to me that the news coverage is mainly limited to US and European news items.
I was thinking that Reddit could change it’s layout a little to resemble more of Digg, although Digg as a different User Interface (UI). I feel that the amount of text is very cluttery, and perhaps this is something that Alexis and team (and I’m sure that they are..being the hardworking entrepreneurs that they are) can start improving upon.
I’m looking forward to visiting team Reddit at Wired headquarters!
