Day 1
July 22nd, 2009, Posted in Uncategorized by melody tanDay 1 started off with the visiting of Stanford University. As the coach drove into the campus, we were greeted with by the gorgeous architecture of Stanford, something which was very different from NUS. During the tour, what caught my attention most was the gay and lesbian’s statues within the campus. Prof Kosnix explained it to be as a form of equality and respect for all beliefs and behaviours, that one should not judge others. Despite knowing that some parents / students are uncomfortable with the statues, Stanford went ahead witth it. This I was certain would have been a big who-ha in Singapore should such statues be erected be it in school or anywhere for that matter.
Anyway, we subsequently met entrepreneurs Laina & Ann Maria (Get-It –> Clean Tech) and Oosma ( Recruitment Agency). One thing I noticed about their presentation was their enthusiasm and passion about their business. They were also very willing to share.
Prof Tom then ended the day with an interesting reflection session asking us to think into our future. Here are some questions he asked and my answers to them.
1) Where am I living 10 years from now
–> I would most probably be moving around a couple of places namely such as Singapore, Australia, United States and United Kingdom.
2) What makes me happy
–> Entrepreneurship, Fashion, Financial Freedom $_$ haha
3) What are my values?
–> Still thinking haha
4) How am I creating value?
–> Still thinking!
5) What are my strengths & weaknesses
Strengths — Ambitious, Confident, Clear of what I want in life
Weaknesses — Lazy, Procrastinater
6) What is my mission?
–> To encourage entrepreneurship & providing people with a solution to their fashion woes
7) What are some of the things that happen 10 yrs ago that got you started on your journey to your destiny?
–> This has to be even since i took the step to quit Junior College. Being someone who prefered to stick to the terms, this was a major turning point for me as I begin to make my own decisions in life. Subsequently in polytechnic, I built my confidence and love for marketing & fashion. My aim therefore is to go into the fashion retailing / mkting industry.
Anything that could get you started on your path?
–>Prof Tom mentioned about networking which I felt was extremelty important to my path as an entrepreneur. Oosma also mentioned about methods to raise funds and I realised how sometimes we do not alwys need to depend on VCs.
